What is an Essential Oil?

What is an Essential Oil?

I'm sitting here diffusing a combination of essential oils for opening sinuses and improving my mood (plus I LOVE the smell!)  I thought I'd write about a question a lot of people have.

When I share my essential oils with my friends, I often hear the question, "What exactly is an essential oil?"  There are several ways to answer this question.  My most basic answer is that essential oils are the volatile compounds and the lifeblood of the plant.  They are very powerful and have uses for emotions, healing the body, and more.  Then I just direct my friends to this webpage, What is an Essential Oil?

This page is a great place to begin to learn about essential oils! Complete with a video that quickly explains the basics, this page is extremely helpful for anyone who has never heard of essential oils, needs a quick explanation of what essential oils are, or wants to learn more about the expansive world of essential oil use.

Why I Started Using doTERRA EO's After So Many Years

I have been using and loving my essential oils for several years now!  I have used MANY different brands and qualities of oils.  I started out over ten years ago using the cheaper oils at Whole Foods and other Health stores because I thought they were all basically the same.  NOT!  As I worked with the oils and tried different kinds, learned more about the process of extraction, I realized that what I use the oils for must determine the quality of the oil I buy.

So, I began purchasing the oils I use for health and emotional reasons from doTerra because of the high quality and effectiveness of their oils.  I actually did a "line up" test with several (at least three) brands of different plant oils (peppermint, lavender, and frankincense) and had my husband and daughter sniff each.  doTerra won every single time.

Disclosure:  I do use a different brand of essential oils for my soap-making and room sprays because of the quantity I use.  I get my essential oils for soap making at Starwest Botanicals, and although I love the quality of their oils, I believe doTERRA oils have more of an impact on health because of the therapeutic grade of the oils.   If you are making oil blends for your skin, inhaling, or diffusing---doTerra oils are the best you can buy, in my opinion! (Although, diffusing a decent quality oil is better than diffusing nothing, in my opinion.)

About Essential Oil Accessories:

I LOVE diffusers.  There are so many different kinds.  Right now, I'm hooked on the Organic Aromas diffusers!  I especially love the Radiance diffuser.  It gently nebulizes the essential oils without using heat or water, which helps to maintain the benefits of the oils.  They make wonderful Holiday gifts along with a nice bottle of an essential oil!
