Make an Herbal Body Scrub with Juniper and Rosemary for Smooth, Soft Skin

NOTE: This article is all about how to make the loveliest salt or sugar body scrub using rosemary and juniper. It smells beautiful, and you’ll be taking advantage of the plants’ natural ability to stimulate circulation in the skin while providing exfoliation. If you use mineral salts, you’ll have the added benefit of the minerals, too. The herbs and essential oils in this natural body scrub are also helpful supporters for those with presentations of cellulite, lipidema, and lymphedema. Enjoy!

If you're anything like me, you tend to procrastinate until the last minute when it comes to making or buying gifts. I do have a couple of friends---I'm sure you know the type: They get all their shopping out of the way like last June!

Well, although I wish I were that person...I'm just not. So….

I turn to easy, simple, and fast natural gifts I can make…and that people LOVE!

Here is a great recipe that is easy to make and customize that you can whip up quickly to gift to a special person: Juniper-Rosemary-Pine Salt Skin Scrub.

It smells fresh, clean, and best of all, it's GREAT for your skin! And even if you ARE that kind of early bird, super organized holiday shopper, you might just want to whip up a few of these just in case you have unexpected guests or last minute folks to buy for.

Even if you’re not need to give a gift at this time, this scrub is just great to have around for your own personal use. Especially if you’re a person who suffers from cellulite, lipidema, or lymphedema presentations like many of us do, this scrub is quite supportive of healthy circulation throughout your body and skin.

Awhile back, I wrote an article about using salt vs. sugar in homemade exfoliating skin scrubs because I always wondered what the difference was. Salt and sugar scrubs using herbs and natural ingredients are wonderful and much appreciated gifts, but the question arises, which is best to use? Sugar or salt?

The link above explains the differences between sugar and salt in a scrub, so if you decide you'd rather use sugar in this recipe than the salt, it will work great either way!

And if you are fortunate to have juniper trees (Juniperis communis or J. nevadensis)—- not the landscape bushes—as some of these are toxic—- growing in your area like I did in the Southern Nevada mountains, you can easily forage for healthy fresh berries!

Juniper berry soap is another great skincare option!

How to Make Juniper-Rosemary Salt Scrub

Scrubs are decadent bath and skincare products, with a true spa appeal. And, they’re perfect for self-care skin-loving rituals. Best of all….they’re simply SO easy to make, and this herbal version is extra special.

Ingredients You'll Need:

1 cup finely ground sea salt or Himalayan salt. The more finely ground, the better.

1/2 tablespoon ground Rosemary powder (Starwest Botanicals link)

1/2 tablespoon ground Juniper powder (optional)

30 drops Juniper essential oil (Amazon link)

20 drops Grapefruit essential oil

10 to 15 drops Rosemary essential oil

**1/2 cup oil as a base. Almond oil, Grapeseed oil, or even Olive Oil (although it's much heavier) will all do nicely. See my note below about using oil in your scrubs as gifts.

NOTE: If you don’t have freshly foraged juniper berries, you can also buy juniper powder already to go from Starwest Botanicals . You can also purchase essential oils and all of your bulk culinary herbs and spices there, too. It’s where I shop for all my products!

Directions for Making Your Salt Scrub:

Step 1) Grind your herbs, unless they are already powdered.

I like to buy mine from Starwest Botanicals because you can often find them whole, cut or powdered there, and they are fresh and high quality.

Step 2) Add your powdered herbs to the salt.

Step 3) Now add your essential oils

Starwest Botanicals has great essential oils. You can also find good essential oils on Amazon. I understand Plant Therapy essential oils are better than most found on Amazon.

Step 4) Mix well with a fork until the essential oils are completely stirred in

Step 5) Pour into your chosen container.

I love using simple Mason wide mouth "squatty" 8 ounce jelly jars for my scrubs because you can be creative with fancying them up, or leave them just plain. Either way, they look great, are reusable, and pretty.

***Step 6) Mix in your carrier oil. You can find out which carrier oils are best to use in this article. There are LOTS of choices!

This last step is purely optional. It has to do with the oil. I personally don't like using oil in my shower or tub, as luxurious as it is for my skin. It's just hard to clean up, and I'm a bit lazy. So, I choose to leave it out, and just scrub my skin with the mixture as is.

However, many people have grown used to having the oil in their scrubs, and that's great! you'll want to use about half the oil as salt if you want to add it. You can play around with adding less or more, as you like.

Adding the oil will create a wonderful spa experience, leaving your skin feeling smooth and moist at the same time.  Lovely! Just know you'll be cleaning oil out of your bathing area.

If you are gifting this scrub, you might want to just add a bit of oil. Or, you could leave it out and gift it along with a pretty bottle of carrier oil for your friend to use as they desire. Or, just add in the whole bit! You choose!

Final Thoughts on Making Juniper-Rosemary Salt Scrub

Frankly, I love this stuff! After I made it, I had the container sitting on our wood stove for about a week, and it scented the room beautifully! Fresh, clean, and uplifting.  I know you'll love this combination!

And guess what? If you’re running late on getting your gifts ready for giving or doing some last minute shopping, making an exfoliating skin scrub out of 100% natural ingredients is always a hit!

Have you made salt scrubs before? Do you have a favorite scent? Also, I'm curious---do you have a preference between salt or sugar? Leave a comment in the comments section! I love to hear your thoughts!
